What size Muay Thai shin guards do I need?

size muay thai shin guards

Knowing what size Muay Thai shin guards you need can be confusing. Choosing the right shin guards for Muay Thai is essential for both protection and comfort. Whether you are just starting your Muay Thai journey or looking to replace your current shin guards, getting the correct fit can make a big difference to your training.

Shin guards that are too small can leave parts of your legs exposed, while oversized shin guards may move around during sparring, become uncomfortable or restrict your movement.

But with different brands, sizes and designs available, how do you know which size to choose?

In this guide, we’ll explain how Muay Thai shin guards should fit, how to measure your legs correctly and what to look for when choosing the right size.

How should Muay Thai shin guards fit?

Muay Thai shin guards should fit securely around your lower legs without feeling overly tight or restricting movement.

A properly fitted pair should:

  • Cover your shin: The main padding should protect your shin bone, extending from just below the knee towards your ankle.
  • Protect the top of your foot: Shin guards should include an attached foot protector to cover the instep and your toes should be exposed.
  • Stay securely in place: Your shin guards shouldn’t slide down or rotate excessively when kicking, checking kicks or moving around.
  • Allow natural movement: You should be able to bend your knees, mover your ankles and throw kicks comfortably.
  • Feel comfortable: straps should hold the shin guards firmly without digging into your calves or restricting circulation.

The goal is to find shin guards that offer good coverage while allowing you to move freely during training.

Muay Thai Shin Guards Size Guide

Muay Thai shin guards are generally available in Small (S), Medium (M), Large (L) and Extra Large (XL), although some brands offer additional sizes.

Your height can provide a useful starting point when choosing a size but it’s important to remember that shin guard sizing varies between manufacturers.

Different brands, including Fairtex, Twins Special and Primo may use different measurements and fitting systems. Have a look at our size guards for shin guards in our product pages.

How to measure your legs for Muay Thai Shin guards

One of the most reliable ways to choose the correct shin guard size is to measure your shin length using a flexible measuring tape.

Step 1: Measure your shin length

Sit on a chair with your knee bent at approximately 90 degrees and your foot flat on the floor.

Measure from just below the kneecap down to the top of your ankle.

This measurement will help determine the length of shin protection you need.

Step 2: Measure your calf

Although shin length is important, the circumference of your calf can also affect how the shin gaurds fit.

Using a flexible measuring tape, measure around the widest part of your calf.

If you have particular muscular calves, you may need slightly bigger shin guards such as the Fairtex SP9 shin guards. While fighters with slimmer legs may need shin guards with a slimmer fit such as the Twins Special SGL10 shin guards.

Step 3: Measure your foot length

Measure from the end of your toes to where your shin meets your foot. Toes should not be covered by the shin guard foot pad.

Step 4: Compare your measurements

Once you have your measurements, compare them with the sizing chart for the specific brand and model of shin guards you are considering.

How do you know if your shin guards are too big?

Wearing shin guards that are too large can cause several problems during training.

Oversized shin guards may:

  • Slide down your legs during sparring
  • Rotate when you throw or block kicks
  • Interfere with your knee movement
  • Feel bulky and uncomfortable
  • Make it harder to move naturally

If you are constantly fining yourself adjusting your shin guards between rounds, it could be a sign they are too big or that the straps aren’t providing a secure fit.

How do you know if your shin guards are too small?

Shin guards that are too small can be equally problematic. They may leave areas of your shin exposed, offer insufficient foot coverage or feel restrictive when training.

Common signs that your shin guards are too small include:

  • The padding doesn’t adequately cover your shin
  • The straps feel excessively tight
  • The foot protector does not provide sufficient coverage
  • The guards feel uncomfortable when you bend you knees or move your ankles.

Remember, shin guards should feel secure, not restrictive.

What size shin guards should beginners buy?

If you are new to Muay Thai, choosing your first pair of shin guards can seem confusing.

The most important thing is to find a pair that offers sufficient protection, fits securely and feels comfortable during training.

Use this guide to help you measure your shins, calves, and foot length, then compare your measurements with the size guide for the brand and model of shin guards you are looking at. If you are still unsure, you can contact our team for further help and advice.
